Who we are

Our mission is Transforming Oregon’s behavioral health by replacing coercion with empowering self-directed individualized supports that align with consumers’ lived experience, values and goals. delivered with compassion, dignity, inclusion and respect.

We are a diverse group of volunteers. We identify as psychiatric survivors, mental health consumers, and allies (family members and clinicians) We initially came together to address a crisis: a misguided piece of legislation that would basically made it easier to civilly commit individuals in Oregon. This is a concerning, national trend.

Although we were not successful in keeping the bill from being passed, we were reminded how important it is for us to unite and build political power from the ground up. We must do more than simply resist efforts to erode our rights; we must cultivate a positive vision, of a life-affirming mental health system in Oregon, one that is rooted in rights and offers people hope, dignity, and real choices.

We must imagine a future where individuals receive voluntary access to the care and support and protection they deserve.

With support from MindFreedom Oregon, MindFreedom International, Seeding Justice Foundation and the Resist Foundation, we are rooted in grass-roots activism.

Currently, we have established a ‘task force’ that meets informally every second, and fourth Friday, at 1:00 p.m. pacific standard time. Our goal is to establish more formalized governance procedures, such as decision-making procedures in the near future, with voting privileges limited to our members. For now, our meetings are virtual and open to the public. Pre-registration is required. For more information, you may write to info@oregoncoalitionforchoice.org.
